I believe it is possible, but there are certainly a lot of noisy people who think otherwise. I think it's a lot easier on Hubzilla (and its relatives), because you have better control over who can participate in a conversation that you start.

Looks like you are currently allowing random people (like me!) to comment on your posts. If that starts to be a problem, try changing your settings.

I don't mind random people commenting. I enjoy a good debate. I just lose respect for them (a little bit) if they resort to name calling and insults. But I still treat them with respect. I would rather take the high ground than stoop to their level.

It is definitely possible. The problem is that the loudest people are usually the most aggressive, so that is all you hear. But there are a lot of people who are willing to have a normal conversation. The tricky part is finding such people.
