The weird thing about the National Popular Vote Initiative is that people don't realize that they are basically taking away their own influence unless they already live in a big state. That means that most populous states will always win the elections, and small states will never win the elections. It benefits states like California and New York and Texas, since it given them more influence over the election, and effectively mutes anyone who does not live in those states. All that you have done is shift around which states are more influential in elections and made it permanent. At least with the electoral college, the swing states change every election.
